ZOLLINO
AND THE PREISTORIC AGE
Salento is a region dotted with symbols
of the prehistoric age, where you find dolmens and
menhirs, rectangular blocks of stone that traditionally
historians date back to the Iron Age, however, some debate
that they date back even prior to then (Neolithic).
They emerged in the 3rd and 2nd centuries B.C in Northern
Europe (France and Great Britain) .
In Zollino, just a few minutes away from the Campine
Resort, you can find simply walking through the countryside,
a menhir 4 meters high, grounded in the rock and a
nearby dolmen!
The menhirs in the Salento region were used by the Romans
as ancient road markers and could be found at all the major
crossroads and trade routs of the time.
There is no doubt, in any case, about their strong links with
the pagan culture and religious ceremonies. Later on the Christians
superimposed their own faith and rituals:
it's possible to find traces of crosses carved into the menhir.
